Departments of Epidemiology

Department of Clinical Studies
The purpose of the study program carried out jointly by the Departments of Epidemiology in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is to conduct epidemiological studies to better understand how radiation exposure affects health through the long-term follow-up of the Life Span Study, In Utero Study, and Children of Atomic-bomb Survivors (F1) Study cohorts.

Common written research protocols are adhered to by the department staff in the two cities to ensure that epidemiological studies at RERF are carried out in a consistent manner. Both departments have similar organizational structures, except that the Hiroshima department has more personnel, particularly research scientists. The department in each city has four major sections: 1. Analytical research group (Epidemiologic Analysis Laboratory in Hiroshima, Computer Management Office in Nagasaki), 2. The Master File Section, 3. The Tumor and Tissue Registry Office, and 4. The Pathology Laboratory.

The Epidemiological Program is at the center of RERF's scientific programs and is internationally recognized as a major source of radio-epidemiological data.
