Seventh meeting of the RERF Board of Councilors held at Hiroshima RERF

The seventh meeting of the RERF Board of Councilors* was held June 20-21, 2017, at Hiroshima RERF. The main agenda items and discussions at the meeting are summarized below:
- Ⅰ. Reports of activities and settlement of accounts
- A report was made on FY2016 activities, based on activities reports, settlement of accounts statements, as well as an audit report. Approval of all items was made by the Board members without objection.
- Ⅱ. Activity plans, budgets, and related matters
- As was the case at last fiscal year’s meeting, reports were made on this year’s FY2017 activity plans, including research projects into A-bomb survivors’ health, research projects about the health of A-bomb survivors’ children (F1), research to elucidate radiation doses in individuals from the atomic bombings and their effects, projects to publicize research results and to collaborate with other scientific organizations, training programs for domestic and overseas specialists, public information programs, and associated work necessary for the above projects, along with working budgets required for implementation of these projects. In FY2016, a new internal audit function was introduced and continuation of this audit function in and after FY2017 was discussed.
- Ⅲ. Recommendations by the Scientific Advisory Committee and RERF’s responses thereto
- During the 44th meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) held in Hiroshima March 1-3, 2017, SAC reviews focused on the Department of Epidemiology. The SAC made several general recommendations related to the foundation’s organizational and departmental strategic plans, the research cluster system, the Research Resource Center, and guidance/training for young research scientists. At the meeting, BOC members reviewed RERF’s responses to the SAC recommendations.
- Ⅳ. RERF’s strategic plans
- The BOC discussed RERF’s strategic plans based on reports regarding the foundation’s current status and issues, as well as its future approaches.
- Ⅴ. Appointment of Officers
- The BOC members voted to reappoint RERF’s three Directors upon expiration of their terms of office. With the resignation of the U.S. Auditor, his replacement was appointed, and appointments of two Scientific Advisors were made due to expired terms of office. There was also replacement made of a Scientific Advisor due to resignation. In addition, there were appointments of two Local Advisors at the expiration of terms of office. All appointments and changes were approved by the Board.
* The Board of Councilors is the highest governing body of a public interest foundation, which is RERF’s legal organizational designation. This body decides basic rules for the system of work execution (election and dismissal of Directors and Auditors, etc.) and for work administration (changes to the Articles of Incorporation, etc.). At the same time, the body plays a supervisory role with regard to whether organizational administration is being appropriately performed based on laws/ordinances and articles of incorporation through such means as approval of accounting and financial statements.
