Publications about the History of ABCC-RERF

In response to requests for information about the early years of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, the following list of publications has been compiled. The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) has not officially reviewed nor formally endorsed these publications, although RERF staff members may be acknowledged by the authors.

Effects of Atomic Radiation. A Half-century of Studies from Hiroshima and Nagasaki (John Wiley and Sons, New York, USA, 1995, 416 pp, ISBN 0-471-12524-5).
This book was written by William J. Schull, who has long contributed to ABCC-RERF projects. He has served as head of the Epidemiology and Statistics Departments and as RERF resident director several times and participated in the organization’s early genetics studies.
Children of the Atomic Bomb. An American Physician’s Memoir of Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and the Marshall Islands (Duke University Press, Dept. HLW, Box 90660, Durham, North Carolina, USA, 1995, 200 pp, ISBN 0-8223-1658-7 [cloth]).
The author, James N. Yamazaki, was the physician-in-charge of the ABCC Nagasaki Laboratory, 1949-1951. The book was cowritten by Louis B. Fleming, a former foreign correspondent and editorial writer for the Los Angeles Times.
Suffering Made Real. American Science and the Survivors at Hiroshima (University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1994, 287 pp, ISBN 0-226-48237-5 [cloth]).
At the time of publication, the author, M. Susan Lindee, was an assistant professor in the Department of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. This book was reviewed in Science Vol 268, pp 1201-2, 1995, and in JAMA Vol 274(5):430-1, August 2, 1995.
“Hiroshima and Nagasaki revisited: The Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation,” Perspectives in Biology and Medicine Vol 37, No. 4, pp 515-45, 1994.
Frank W. Putnam, former RERF visiting director (1982-1987) and US National Research Council Assembly of Life Sciences chairman (1977-1981), wrote a 30-page historical review article about ABCC-RERF.
The Children of Atomic Bomb Survivors. A Genetic Study (National Academy Press, Washington, DC, 1991,518 pp, ISBN 0-309-04488-X [hard], ISBN 0-309-04537-1 [soft]).
This book, edited by James V. Neel and William J. Schull, is a compilation of 13 previously published books or papers, plus the authors’ analysis of the possible course of future studies. Information on the background of ABCC’s establishment can be found in the sections titled “Orientation” (pp 1-8), “Genetic effects of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki” (pp 9-11; reprinted from Science Vol 106, No. 2754, October 10, 1947) and “The effect of exposure to the atomic bombs on pregnancy and termination in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Chapter 1. Background” (pp 29-32). The latter section is from a now out-of-print book published in 1956 by the US National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council.
Physician to the Gene Pool (Genetic Lessons and Other Stories) (John Wiley & Sons, New York, USA, 1994, 457 pp, ISBN 0-471-30844-7).
In his autobiography, long-time RERF research collaborator and US National Academy of Sciences member, James V. Neel, devoted parts of three chapters to atomic-bomb survivor genetics research. A member of the first scientific survey team to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki on behalf of the US National Research Council in late 1946, Neel has played a continuing role in ABCC-RERF research during the past five decades.
Song Among the Ruins (Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, 1990, 305 pp, ISBN 0-674-82042-8).
Written by William J. Schull, this book is not strictly a history of the ABCC-RERF studies. However, it does describe some aspects of the early days of ABCC in Part I. Occupation. 1. Hiroshima, 1949 and 3. Surveying the Children.
