Pathology study

It had been recognized that certain cancers were not properly described as the cause of death in death-certificate records on which Life Span Study cancer mortality studies depend. Therefore, to understand the accuracy of death-certificate records, approximately 7,500 autopsies were performed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki from 1948 to 1988. In addition to confirming the accuracy of death certificates, autopsy was able to identify undiagnosed conditions not otherwise apparent.

Pathology study has been continued for a long period as one of the major research programs at RERF. After completion of the autopsy program, pathological studies are being conducted based on tissue registries regarding cancers of the breast, thyroid, skin, salivary gland, ovary, cantral nervous system, and other sites as well as lymphoma associated with A-bomb radiation exposure.
