RERF Epidemiology Department Recognized for Excellence in Cancer Registry Work
Since the initiation of cancer data projects in Hiroshima (1957) and Nagasaki (1958), the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) has played a central role in cancer registry efforts in both prefectures, in collaboration with local hospitals, medical associations, and governments. Following the enactment of Japan’s 2016 Cancer Registry Promotion Act, RERF has continued operating under contract with Hiroshima and Nagasaki prefectural governments to provide high-quality cancer statistics.
At the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Association of Cancer Registries, held in Aichi Prefecture during June 5–6, 2025, RERF’s Tumor & Tissue Registry Office (Epidemiology Department, Hiroshima) received the prestigious Prefectural Cancer Registry Office Award. This award recognized the inclusion of data from seven prefectures, including Hiroshima (coordinated by RERF), together with data from Japan’s National Cancer Center as highly reliable sources of information in the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), Volume XII, a globally respected resource on cancer incidence trends published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR).

In addition, three RERF staff members received the “Cancer Registration Practical Service Award,” which recognizes individuals for long-term contributions to cancer registry work. To date, 17 RERF staff have received this individual honor.
RERF reaffirms its commitment to supporting cancer control efforts locally and nationally through the accurate collection and provision of high-quality cancer data through cancer registry work commissioned by Hiroshima and Nagasaki prefectural governments.
