Dr. Niwa receives Gold Medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ohtsura Niwa, who served as RERF Chair from June 2015 to June 2023, has been awarded the Gold Medal for Radiation Protection by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to him.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects and awards the Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry. It awards the Gold Medal for Radiation Protection every four years.

Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, Dr. Niwa contributed to the creation of opportunities for dialogue between the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and local citizens in the affected areas, as well as with local, regional, and national authorities, all of which led to ICRP Publication 146*1. This award recognizes Dr. Niwa’s significant contribution to dialogue in Fukushima as a new style of stakeholder participation that provides an important ethical layer to radiation protection.
