Congratulations to Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) for being named recipient of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize

The Radiation Effects Research Foundation wants to extend its heartfelt congratulations to the Nihon Hidankyo organization for being awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) has the utmost respect and gratitude for Nihon Hidankyo’s courage and tireless efforts in calling on the world to abolish nuclear weapons. The words of the hibakusha, who have risked their lives to convey their message, continue to serve as powerful personal testimony to the dangers of nuclear weapons and have served as a guiding light for the promotion of world peace for many years.

RERF has had the honor of receiving invaluable input from representatives of Nihon Hidankyo serving in our local liaison councils in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where their frank opinions have contributed greatly to our research efforts. The results of our work together not only have supported the health and welfare of atomic bomb survivors but also laid the foundation for protecting the health of people worldwide from the effects of radiation. Nihon Hidankyo being awarded this year’s prize provides us with the precious opportunity to reflect on the significance of our research activities, which are deeply rooted in the experiences and health of the hibakusha.

Encouraged by this award, we vow to further our contributions to the health and welfare of atomic bomb survivors, deepen our understanding of the health effects of radiation, and advance our research activities in the service of world peace and the health and well-being of all humankind.

We close by once again offering our heartfelt congratulations on this prestigious honor and asking for Nihon Hidankyo’s continued guidance and support.
