RERF mourns the passing of Dr. James D. Cox

I regret to pass on the news that Dr. James Cox, former RERF Councilor, died this past August 14, 2018, just one month after celebrating his 80th birthday. A funeral for Dr. Cox was held on August 19.

Dr. Cox was born in the U.S. state of Ohio in 1938. After being granted an M.D. from the University of Rochester, he gained experience as a radiologist at a hospital in Colorado Springs and later spent time in France on a fellowship. During those years, he met his first wife, Christa, with whom he had three children. In 1973, he assumed a position at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he met his second wife, the radiologist Ritsuko Komaki. He was recruited to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1988 where, until his retirement in 2014, he served as Head of the Radiation Oncology Division.

Dr. Cox’s research achievements in the field of radiotherapy are world renowned. At RERF, he served as Councilor from 2011 until the expiration of his term of office in 2016, working together with RERF Councilor Dr. Yasuhito Sasaki. During those years, in 2012, RERF changed its status from nonprofit foundation to public interest incorporated foundation, with operations managed by the RERF Board of Directors under the guidance of the Board of Councilors. At the organization’s Board of Councilors meetings, Dr. Cox consistently provided level-headed and precise feedback regarding RERF operations based on his long-term experience in the field of radiation research.

Dr. Cox’s great contributions as Councilor supported RERF during a period of major organizational transition; may he rest in peace.
